[ sometime after the execution and katara is finished with tending to nino, she'll look around the island. there are a few people she'd like to see after the mess that was their first weekend here.

she spots one of them soon enough. katara approaches akira, her hands folded in front of her. ]

... Hey. I wanted to apologize to you again for the trial. You've just went through... a lot.

[this works out, because he wanted to find katara anyway. unlike most of the others who had gone off the rails with conversation—katara had been doing her part.

he didn't necessarily agree with her at points, even if it was fruitless in the end—but still. she had been trying, and he snapped at an entire group of people because of his personal feelings. it's unlike him to be that openly emotional, no matter how bad a situation gets. he wanted to apologize for that anyway and clear the air.

so hey, it works.

he can only offer a shake of his head in response. he stands before her casual (somehow), with hi posture a bit slumped and hands tucked in his pockets. he looks unkempt as ever from the neck up, with his huge glasses and completely disheveled hair. when he speaks, his tone is much gentler and less authoritative than it had been at the trial, or even during the execution's aftermath.]

I owe you one of my own. I still shouldn't have snapped at you yesterday. [a pause, and:] That's not very much like me.

I... think that the situation called for people acting unlike themselves.

[ stress will do that to you. but this was more than just stress. it was the loss of someone that akira obviously held dear, and in such a brutal, unneeded way. katara is honestly impressed that he managed to keep his cool like that for the most part; if she had been in his shoes, she would have snapped a lot more than just telling people to focus. ]

I talked to her soon after we arrived. We were going to set something on fire together. [ it sounds like a joke, but honestly they were both serious. ] You have every right to be angry. And I don't mean just at us-- everything.

[akira has a surprisingly good hold on his anger—probably because he's angry very often and it constantly exists beneath the surface. he just does his best to channel it productively.

...something that didn't happen at the trial.]

I don't think I'll stop being angry. [he can admit that. it's not like it's surprising.] But I don't want to take it out on people. Not people who don't deserve it.

[and quietly, but a little lighter:] I'll set something on fire with you.

[he knows haru was probably serious about that. she was the sort to get a thrill from a little bit of danger, after all.]

... [ she raises an eyebrow, but her expression doesn't seem judgmental, only curious. there's a short pause before she holds her hand out to him. ]

Let's light something on fire then.

[ if anything, it'll be a release. and it'll feel nice to do something that haru didn't get to. ]

[oh. he'll hold his hand out to return the gesture. it's a deal?]

Just a matter of deciding what to light. I'd say the Chiefs' hut, but I think I'll get scolded for that.

[ it's a deal. a firm handshake is happening right now. ]

I'm not sure if we'd be able to get away with that one yet... I don't want to take out something that'll be useful to everyone else though, but it'll have to be something that'd be relieving to burn.

[ like hal and pal's stupid faces but yeah that one is off the table probably ]

I wonder if we could get the papers we put our votes on.

[burn the bullshit votes in the bonfire?]

It sounds nice and cathartic.

Oh. I like that idea, actually. We'd... probably need to ask the Chiefs for them though.

[ if they've still been kept, then they would probably be in their hut, and so far they haven't been able to break into it. ]

[he makes a face at that notion—]

Asking them for anything sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

[but, you know. akira definitely has a bigger vendetta than anyone else on this island right now. it's fine.]

No, I agree. I'd prefer taking it from under their stupid, heartless noses. We just need to figure out where they are first, I guess.

[ detective work. ]

[hm.]

Would they have left them in the room after we voted?

... I don't think anyone really paid attention to what they did with them after that big reveal.

[ they were too busy being, you know, extremely furious at getting tricked. ]

We can go check.

[they probably won't find anything because hal and pal hate joy unless there's murder involved, but it's fine.]

We might as well, right? We won't know until we look.

And if that doesn't work we can always pick something else. Like, I don't know, their shoes or something. Or their face.

[ katara ]

[he agrees, it's fine.]

Burning them wouldn't be a bad idea, it would solve a lot of our problems.

[first drowning, now burning. he's got this.]

It would be really fitting, too. I doubt anyone would complain.

[ actually, plenty of people would, considering how many people had stopped her just from hitting one of them. they'd probably approve less of setting them aflame. ]

I'm sure someone would find a reason to.

[he's been scolded plenty too already, it's fine. he feels it, katara.]

Well, they can't babysit us all the time. Even if it's not setting them on fire, I'll still feel better with at least one hit.

[ she'd still feel awful, actually, but it's like what they said earlier. stress relief, even a small and seemingly insignificant one, can do wonders. ]

Maybe we should just light their whole hut on fire when nobody's looking and we know they're in there.

[he probably would not actually do this, but it sounds nice!!]

I wouldn't want to hurt their pet though. It's not its fault it was raised by murderous scum.

Ah... that's true.

[he frowns.

he can't hurt a cat!!! even a big cat, he can't do it. he can't be the ash of this game.]

Well, the cat has to go outside sometime.

[ to like... poop and stuff, or something. ]

It's just a matter of if Tweedle A and Tweedle B stay inside when that happens.

Basically... it'll require knowing what their usual schedules are like, I guess.

[ this is an awful idea but it's also very good. ]

We'd have to pay pretty close attention to their schedules if we want to pull that off.

Honestly, I think we should probably be doing that anyway.

[ they've already been shown to do things in underhanded ways. keeping an eye on their hosts won't hurt. ]

You're right. If we don't keep a close eye on them—

[will they kill someone and frame another innocent person for that, too?]

Even if they were telling the truth about that being the only time they'll interfere like that [ she doesn't sound like she completely believes that ] that doesn't mean they still won't help whoever decides to kill. No matter what happens, they're our number one enemies here.

[he nods.]

They still have a hand in everything. I don't... really think that many people would just play along with their stupid rules if they weren't forcing it somehow.

[his feeling of them being enemies is probably even more personal, but it's fine.]

I don't think so either. Everyone has been really... helpful so far. We didn't have to try to solve our problems together like this, even after we found out what the game was about.

[ katara prefers to try seeing the good in people before the bad. sure, some of the people they're with have made it obvious that they do not care, but... ]

Yeah. I think most of the people here have the right idea. We all want to get through this alive and go home.

[there are definitely some people he doesn't trust, but he doesn't keep his focus on that for the time being.]

It's easier to do that working together than turning on each other.

Right... once everyone really starts fighting is when things will go downhill. We won't really be able to solve anything that happens if we're only counting on ourselves.

[ who are you going to get information from then?? the chiefs? nah. ]

Let's try to avoid that as long as we can. We'll have to trust each other a little more—it's going to get tough. But... we can't count on them—the Chiefs.

[they can only count on each other, as a group, to figure out the answers they need.]

Even if we could, I wouldn't want to. Not after... all of this.

[ katara, while friendly, is also bitter and holds grudges. ]

You're preaching to the choir here.
