[ waterbending is the worst. especially in his situation, with actual lightning coming down from the sky as they work. which he should be able to redirect, instead of... three droplets. (yeah he's not good at waterbending yet). the only silver lining here is that katara has firebending now, so.... at least one of them can be protected from the storm. ]

Katara. You need to know how to redirect lightning if we're going to do this.

[ it's said in a tone that sounds like it could be taken as a joke, if her expression didn't betray the fact that she was being very serious, actually. ]

[ why is she being like this, gosh, didn't they just go on a life-changing murder fieldtrip together? that is to say, he has no idea what he did to make her so mad (recent..ly...) and now's not the time to question it. because of the lightning and all. ]

[ she's like s1 katara at waterbending except it's fire. ]

[ look zuko wasn't in that s1 episode. he knows that aang accidentally burned katara while trying to firebend and that's it. ]

Well, you're in luck, actually. Uncle taught me this technique -- and he told me that he created it by studying waterbenders.

( it starts off a little bit too strong, and korra basically uses up the extent of her good natured energy right off the bat. she uhhhs and ummms for a second, before just sighing, a little put down. )

Anyway, I know the guys can be a little ... much, so. If you wanted to, I'd love the chance to get to see you in person and hopefully clear some stuff up. Mako and Bolin are ( she makes some gesture with her hands that katara can't see. damn you phones. ) ah ha ha, you know! Boys and ... whatever.

even though it, in hindsight, was obvious that korra would reach out to katara, she's still surprised. of course this would get back to her, there's no reason for either of them to keep it from her. but she's still unprepared to hear the voice (yeah, she's definitely not some young child so aang had not passed on super recently).

in the end though, it's not korra's fault that this whole thing went down in... potentially one of the most awkward ways possible... so katara isn't going to hold it against her. so, she'll get a call back shortly after. ]

Meet me in the fighting ring? [ wait. ] I'm not challenging you to a fight or anything!

[ it just seems like the best area that won't have a lot of people around, especially considering most of the temple itself has been turned into pillowland. god. ]

Fighting ring! ( honestly, katara could absolutely issue a fight to her, and she'd accept, hands down, no question about it. ) Yes, yes! See you there.

( she allows herself a small fraction of - giddiness. just a little. katara's been a huge part of her life since she was first discovered as the avatar, and honestly, korra has a lot to be grateful for when it comes to her. she's always been a source of inspiration, an honorable member to the southern water tribe. and. spirits. her children. how many times have they all, individually, saved her life? the numbers are off the charts.

korra won't be bringing all that up, though ( shout out to bolin! ). she makes it to the fighting circle first, obvious in her water tribe attire, bouncing nervously foot to foot while she waits. naga was unfortunately left at home - while adorable, she isn't exactly good for ... the more serious talks in life. reading a room is not her forte, but you can't really blame her, because she is a dog. )

[ it's for that very reason that katara doesn't bring momo along; he'd probably love to meet korra, but this is probably not the best time for that. maybe the second meeting, if this doesn't go horribly wrong somehow.

katara spots korra easily enough. it's not like there's a lot of other people in water tribe garb around here. besides that, she can confirm a few other things pretty quickly-- korra is definitely around mako and bolin's age, which is... older than katara and her group. hm.

she walks over to her, and offers her best smile that hopefully does not betray how extremely weird this all is (it does, a little). ]

Hey. Uh, Korra? Hi! I'm Katara.

( all the mental preparing in the world really couldn't get her ready for this moment, but - luckily, she manages to keep her expression mostly in control, a brief, awkward nod before she returns the smile, falling back on respectful sentiment and taking a bow, fist pressed against her palm. )

Master Katara.

( she's so young. this woman could be her grandmother, was her wife in another life, but she's. jinora's age. korra really didn't expect it to affect her that much, but. it hits hard like an earthbender grinding rock into sand. she's young, and beautiful, and they're clansmen. korra feels an innate connection to her, that exceeds lifetimes and bloodlines.

her stance eases up. )

I'm Korra. But, uh. You said that. Ha. ( she raises a hand up to rub the back of her neck. ) Sorry. This really is a weird situation, huh? But I'm, ( she shakes her head, almost disbelieving, a look of utter sincerity across the lines of her face. ) I'm so honored to meet you, Katara. You're. Pretty much my idol.

( she won't say anything more than that, but. let's be real, if katara asked anything, korra would answer without question. )

[ she heard from bolin that she apparently does... very well for herself in the future, whatever that??? meant?? and katara just assumed that, well, it sounded like the war went in their favor, because she couldn't imagine anything going well if it hadn't.

but hearing it again, from korra no less, kind of makes it sink in more. even the bow is. a lot. aang does that too, sometimes, but a lot of the time it's them teasing each other, and they're very close friends. it's different coming from him, versus... well, another version of aang. ]

Oh. [ is she blushing? katara hopes she isn't. she is. ] Wow, that's-- thank you. I'm honored to meet you, too. Meeting any Avatar is... well, amazing.

( he sounds just. the slightest bit awkward. he hasn't really talked to her since... well, everything, and he knows that she's probably mad at him for ... well, not lying, but at the very least obscuring his identity and his knowledge of hers. )

Hey, Katara. If you and ( lord?? nope. ) Prince Zuko wanted to join Korra, Bolin and I for dinner we've got some stuff that could use a firebender to roast it. Or we can. Come to you. I don't know how you guys are doing with everybody being sick and all. We're all mostly fine over here.

[ she was, initially, a little annoyed after finding out the truth, but after thinking about it she's actually glad that mako didn't bring it up. in the end, bolin's way of greeting her was what bothered her the most. ]

We'll go. [ should she ask zuko first? probably. will she? no.

but also, the fact that they even want zuko to come and don't seem hostile to him means that zuko might... not end up betraying them? which is a lot to think about, but probably not in front of mako. ]

We probably have a lot to talk about.

For what it's worth, I'm sorry about Bolin. He means well, and he's a good guy, he just... gets carried away sometimes. I know this is probably incredibly weird for you, but, we aren't going to bring up anything that might be uncomfortable for you.

( she might recognize this as 'older brother speak' for i slapped him upside the head on your behalf. not literally, but. you know. they Talked. )

No, it's... fine.

[ fineish. as fine as it can be? it helps that katara can tell that bolin genuinely didn't mean any harm. if anything, she's mostly just glad that aang wasn't around for it. it can sometimes be a little hard to predict how he reacts to things like this. ]

I can tell that you're all good people.

( it shouldn't affect him quite so much, to hear that. there's sort of a slow, deliberate inhalation on his end — she might recognize the breath control, innate to both their bending aspects — and then he just lets it out evenly. )

[ "big shoes to fill" this is still weird to hear. katara never really considered what people might think of them after they completed their goal. it seems kind of silly now, since of course something as history changing as this would become well known afterwards.

still. she can't quite wrap her mind around it yet. ]

( korra misses raava and all the elements so much he can see it in the way she moves. like she's completely disconnected from the world. if he could give up earth to her and live without bending, he would in a heartbeat just so she could have something. but. this place... it doesn't work like that.

answering honestly does occur to him. they're all in the same boat, but. he really just can't bring himself to put more on her shoulders. )

( he keeps his tone light. mako doesn't do cheerful, but he can do peaceful well. )

How're things going with you and Prince Zuko? He's the firebending teacher you mentioned, right?

[ so, katara's sick! but hey, so is zuko. it's not fun. still, she's in way worse shape than he is, and even though he's aware that she still can't forgive him, he can't just turn away while she's suffering. he's tried to get her into bed to rest, and is balancing a bowl of soup and a glass of water as he heads into her room. ]

Are you feeling any better?

[ she doesn't look it, but he figures he might as well ask. ]

[ she shoots a glare at him, but can't actually think clearly enough to come up with a suitable response to match the look. instead, she groans. ]

[ why did he ask.... he's an idiot. ]

Well, I brought you some soup and water. To make you feel better.

[ he approaches cautiously, bowl and water tipping a little precariously.... oh no. ]
