Players weren't pitted against each other. [ ... well, not that they knew of :'') ] Winning wasn't as much of a zero sum game.

Huh... so what did you go against, then?

Hmmm, well... The people who run the game, creatures called Noise who can erase Players... And a deadline. There's a mission every day, and failure to complete it within the given time means erasure. That's about it, I believe.
